The map

About this Shamakhi map poster

Shamakhi lies in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus, west of Baku, on rolling ground that rises toward the mountains to the north. From above, the town spreads across ridges and shallow valleys. The older quarters and main streets are arranged around the centre, and newer housing extends along the roads that lead out to vineyards and villages.

For long periods Shamakhi was the capital of the Shirvan state and a stop on caravan routes known for silk. Its Juma Mosque is regarded as one of the oldest in the Caucasus, with origins traced to the eighth century. Severe earthquakes have struck the town repeatedly over the centuries, and on a hill nearby stand the Yeddi Gumbez, burial mausoleums of the Shirvan khans.

A Shamakhi map poster traces how the town adapts to its terrain. Roads curve around the slopes instead of running straight, the centre is compact, and ravines interrupt the street pattern with irregular open spaces. The effect is lively yet restrained, a hill town drawn in black and white with the mountains implied just beyond the frame.

01

Juma Mosque quarter

The historic mosque stands in the town centre, and the streets around it form the densest, most intricate part of the map, where the old town is concentrated.

02

Foothill slopes

The terrain rises toward the Caucasus to the north, so streets bend and step along the contours, producing curved lines rather than a strict grid.

03

Roads to the vineyards

Routes leave the town toward surrounding farmland and villages in a wine-growing area, stretching the composition outward across open, rolling ground.
