About this Shiyan map poster
Shiyan does not look like most Chinese cities from above. There is no broad grid laid over a plain. The city follows the valleys of the Qinba mountain country, so the built-up area stretches in long, thin fingers wherever the ground is flat enough to build on. Roads bend with the streams, and green ridges press in on both sides of almost every neighbourhood.
The city's modern growth is tied to the car industry. From the late 1960s it was home to the Second Automobile Works, the company later known as Dongfeng, and factories and worker housing spread along the valleys to serve it. Many districts still follow the pattern of that period, with plants, depots and residential blocks alternating along the main roads.
Beyond the urban core, the municipality reaches the Wudang Mountains, whose Taoist temple complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It also takes in the Danjiangkou Reservoir on the Han River, the source of the middle route of China's South–North Water Transfer Project.
