The map
Shofirkon lies in the Bukhara region of Uzbekistan, in the irrigated lowlands of the lower Zarafshan valley north-east of Bukhara. The town sits within a network of canals and fields that turn the dry land into farmland. From above, streets and irrigation channels run side by side, and the whole area is divided into long, narrow plots.
This landscape depends on water brought from the Zarafshan river system, and canals are the key lines on the map. They run in straight stretches and gentle curves, often lined with trees, and set the direction of roads and field boundaries. Beyond the irrigated zone, the land becomes desert, with the Kyzylkum lying to the north.
A Shofirkon Shahri map poster shows how people have organised a desert oasis. The town centre is compact, with residential streets stretching out along canals into cotton and wheat fields. The result is a disciplined but organic pattern, where every line on the map is related to the flow of water.
Canals cross the town and its surroundings in long lines, often parallel to roads, and are the backbone of both the landscape and the map.
Farmland around the town is divided into long, narrow plots, creating a fine striped texture that fills the outer areas of the poster.
The irrigated zone ends abruptly where the desert begins, and on a wider map this edge becomes a clear boundary between dense lines and empty space.
