The map

About this Shūnan map poster

Shūnan lies on the Seto Inland Sea coast of Yamaguchi Prefecture. On the map, a narrow band of flat ground runs between the water and wooded hills, and the coastline is heavily reshaped by reclaimed land, docks and large industrial sites. Small islands sit just offshore, closing off parts of the bay.

The city was formed in 2003 when Tokuyama and neighbouring municipalities merged. Its coast holds one of the region's major petrochemical complexes, and Tokuyama Station is on the Sanyō Shinkansen line. Ōtsushima, an island off the coast, was a wartime training base for kaiten manned torpedoes and now has a memorial museum.

A Shūnan map poster offers a type of coastline that is uncommon on posters: straight quay edges, rectangular reclaimed plots and piers, set against the natural curves of islands and forested slopes. The residential streets fill the narrow space between them, which makes the composition layered and unusually graphic.

01

Reclaimed shoreline

Industrial land built out into the sea gives the coast crisp right angles and long straight edges. They contrast sharply with the natural outlines of the nearby islands.

02

Offshore islands

Islands such as Ōtsushima lie close to the shore and partly enclose the bay. On the map they are irregular shapes floating in open water.

03

Hills behind the city

Forested slopes rise close behind the flat coastal strip. Streets thin out as the ground climbs, leaving empty space at the top of the print.

Why Shūnan

A map that means something

Shūnan often hangs in the homes of people who worked on its industrial coast or grew up in Tokuyama before the merger. The mix of engineered harbour and natural islands gives the map a strong, modern look.

Change the title, subtitle and coordinates line to name a district, an old town name or a year. Choose from five styles: Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
