The map
Sisak lies in central Croatia at the meeting of rivers. The Kupa flows into the Sava here, and the Odra joins nearby. On the map, water divides the city into distinct parts, with the historic centre on one bank and industrial and residential areas spreading across the other side. Bridges stitch it together.
The site has been settled for a very long time. As the Roman town of Siscia it was an important centre in the province of Pannonia. In 1593 the Battle of Sisak was fought near its triangular fortress, which still stands on the riverbank close to the confluence and is one of the most recognisable shapes on the map.
In the twentieth century Sisak grew as an industrial town, with an oil refinery and ironworks along the rivers. A Sisak map poster brings together the curving waterways, the old triangular fort and the grid of the centre in one legible frame.

The sixteenth-century fortress near the confluence has a distinctive three-cornered plan. It shows up as a clear geometric figure on the riverbank.
Refinery and ironworks sites along the rivers form large, orderly blocks. They record the city's industrial history in the shape of the land.
