Le faʻafanua
Kelowna spreads along the eastern shore of Okanagan Lake in the southern interior of British Columbia. On a map, the lake is a long band running north to south, and the city fills the broad bench of land beside it, from the compact downtown near the water to suburbs climbing the surrounding slopes. Knox Mountain rises just north of downtown, giving the waterfront a natural bookend.
The William R. Bennett Bridge, a floating bridge, crosses the lake from Kelowna to West Kelowna, and its straight line across the water is one of the defining features of the map. The Okanagan Valley is known for its orchards and vineyards, which climb the hillsides around the city. Mission Creek flows through the southern part of Kelowna, and the airport and a University of British Columbia campus lie to the north.
A Kelowna map poster sets the grid of streets against the calm shape of the lake, with the bridge drawing a fine line from shore to shore. It captures a city many people know through summers on the beach, time at university or a move to the Okanagan, and it reads beautifully in formats that give the water room to breathe.
The William R. Bennett Bridge crosses Okanagan Lake from downtown Kelowna to the western shore, a slender straight line that visually connects the two sides of the valley.
Rising just north of downtown, this steep hill and park forms a clear break in the street grid, with winding roads and trails leading up to viewpoints.
Downtown's waterfront is lined with parks and beaches, including City Park at the foot of the bridge, forming a green edge between the grid and the water.
