The map
Smederevo lies on the right bank of the Danube in central Serbia, east of Belgrade. From above, one shape stands out: the Smederevo Fortress. It is a huge triangle of walls and towers at the point where the small Jezava river flows into the Danube. It was built in the fifteenth century as the capital of Despot Đurađ Branković, and it is one of the largest lowland fortresses in Europe.
Behind the fortress, the town's streets spread inland in a roughly fan-shaped pattern, reaching toward the hills to the south. The area is known for its vineyards and a long tradition of winemaking. On the map, the Danube is a broad band along the northern edge, with the port and industrial areas on the riverbank east and west of the old centre.
A Smederevo map poster is built around the fortress. Its sharp triangular outline is a strong graphic anchor, with the river on one side and the town opening out on the other. Few towns of this size have such a clear centrepiece. In black and white, the walls read like a drawing from an architectural atlas.

The broad river forms the northern edge of the town, with the port and industry along its bank east and west of the fortress.
Streets spread south from the river toward rising ground and the vineyard country around Smederevo, making a wide, fan-like pattern.
