The map

About this Srinagar map poster

Srinagar is shaped by water. The Jhelum River winds through the old city in a series of tight curves, crossed by a line of bridges, while Dal Lake spreads out to the east, broken into basins by causeways, floating gardens and channels. Houseboats line parts of the shore, and the smaller Nigeen Lake lies to the north.

Hills rise within and around the city. Hari Parbat, crowned by a fort, stands above the old town, and Shankaracharya Hill overlooks the lake from the south. Along the eastern shore of Dal, the Mughal gardens of Shalimar and Nishat step down towards the water in terraces built in the seventeenth century.

A Srinagar map poster brings these pieces together: the dense lanes of the old city along the river, the open expanse of the lake with its thin causeways, the terraced gardens and the slopes where the street network ends. It is a map in which water takes up as much space as land.

Jhelum bridges

The river loops through the old city, crossed by a sequence of bridges. Dense lanes and wooden houses crowd its banks on both sides.

Dal Lake

The lake fills the eastern part of the map, divided by causeways and dotted with floating gardens, houseboats and small islands.

03

Mughal gardens

On the lake's eastern shore, terraced gardens such as Shalimar and Nishat form long, symmetrical rectangles stepping down towards the water.
