The map

About this Srivilliputhur map poster

Srivilliputhur lies in Virudhunagar district in southern Tamil Nadu, on the plains below the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats. The town has grown around its temple complex, dedicated to Andal, the poet-saint associated with the town. The tall tower of the temple is the image used in the emblem of the Tamil Nadu government, which makes it one of the best-known structures in the state.

From above, the old centre follows the pattern of many South Indian temple towns. Streets run around the temple precinct, with processional roads leading in and out, and the dense blocks of houses and shops press close to the walls. Beyond this core, the town opens into looser neighbourhoods, water tanks and farmland that stretches towards the hills.

A Srivilliputhur map poster captures the contrast between that compact, temple-centred grid and the open country around it. To the west, the land rises towards the forested slopes of the Ghats. The town is also well known in the region for palkova, a milk sweet, a detail that often connects people to it long after they have left.

01

Temple precinct

The Andal temple sits at the heart of the old town. The streets surrounding it form a rectangular pattern that stands out clearly within the denser, irregular fabric around it.

02

Processional streets

Wide streets running around and away from the temple carry festival processions. On the map they form the strongest lines of the town and connect the centre to the outer roads.

03

Towards the Ghats

West of the town, fields and scattered settlements give way to the foothills of the Western Ghats, adding a quieter, emptier edge to the composition.

Why Srivilliputhur

A map that means something

For devotees, families from the region and people who grew up in its streets, Srivilliputhur is tied to the temple, its festivals and home. A map poster keeps that centre in view, as a record of where a family comes from.

The title, subtitle and coordinates can be changed, for example to add a family name or a wedding date. Choose one of five styles, Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, and download the HD files for $9 or order a print.
