About this St. John's map poster
St. John's wraps around one of the most sheltered harbours on the North Atlantic, entered only through the Narrows, a slim gap between Signal Hill and the South Side Hills. On a map the harbour reads as an almost enclosed pool of white. The old downtown rises from its north shore in terraces, with Water Street and Duckworth Street running parallel to the waterline.
It is one of the oldest European-founded settlements in North America, and the street pattern shows its long, unplanned growth: lanes and stairways cut steeply uphill, then give way to a looser suburban layout. In 1901 Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless signal on Signal Hill, where Cabot Tower still overlooks the harbour mouth.
