About this Šumperk map poster
Šumperk is in northern Moravia, in the valley of the Desná where it opens toward the lowlands, and it is often called the gateway to the Jeseníky mountains. From above, the town has a clear historic core: an oval of dense blocks that walls once enclosed. Later quarters surround it and climb gently toward the forested hills.
Broad streets and green strips now follow the line of the old fortifications. The grand nineteenth-century buildings along them earned the town the nickname little Vienna. The town is also remembered for the witch trials of the late seventeenth century, which killed dozens of people in the region and are commemorated today.
