The map
Surat Thani sits near the mouth of the Tapi River in southern Thailand, where the river widens into estuary channels and mangroves before reaching the Bay of Bandon. The town lines the southern bank, and its main streets run parallel to the water. Piers, markets and a riverside promenade face north toward the channel and its islands.
For many travellers the city is the gateway to Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao, with ferries leaving from ports along the coast. The wider province also includes Chaiya, an ancient centre associated with the Srivijaya period. The town itself is mostly a working provincial capital, with busy markets, government offices and a long riverfront.
A Surat Thani map poster brings the river into the foreground. The Tapi and its branches take up a large part of the frame, dividing into channels around low islands, while the town grid holds the bank. Toward the edges, water, mangrove and farmland take over, and the shape of the coast begins to appear.
The broad river runs along the northern edge of town, with the main streets and waterfront set parallel to its gentle curve.
Low islands and side channels in the estuary break the water into several shapes, adding layered detail near the town's edge.
East of town the river opens toward the Bay of Bandon, where coastline and mangroves take over from streets.
