About this Svínoy map poster
Svínoy is one of the Northern Isles of the Faroe Islands, near Viðoy and Fugloy. From above it is a small, rugged block of land with steep grassy slopes and cliffs along much of its coast. There are almost no roads, so the map is shaped by contour lines, streams and the shoreline rather than by streets.
The island has one village, also called Svínoy, set where a valley runs down to the shore. Its houses, church and small harbour are the only settled area, a tight cluster against a wide stretch of open hillside. People get there by ferry from Hvannasund on Viðoy and, on certain days, by a helicopter service that links the Northern Isles.
The name Svínoy means Pig Island. Like many of the outer Faroese islands, it has a small population that has shrunk over the decades, and daily life follows the rhythm of the boat.
