The map

About this Tachikawa map poster

Tachikawa lies in the Tama area of western Tokyo, on the terrace north of the Tama River. It is one of the main transport and shopping centres of the region, and its map is organised around the station, where the Chuo Line and several other railway lines converge and the elevated Tama Monorail crosses from north to south.

Much of the city's shape comes from its military past. An airfield operated here from the 1920s, later becoming a United States air base until the late 1970s. Part of the former base was turned into Showa Kinen Park, a broad national government park, while other sections became government offices and new commercial districts.

A Tachikawa map poster shows the typical dense fabric of suburban Tokyo, narrow residential streets and small blocks, interrupted by the large open shape of the park and the straight lines of the railways. The Tama River along the southern edge adds a broad, calm band of water. It is a clear and well-structured composition.

Why Tachikawa

A map that means something

Tachikawa is where many people in western Tokyo commute, shop and grow up, and a map captures that everyday geography: the station, the park, the river. It suits a first apartment, a family home in the Tama area, or someone who once lived near the base.

Personalise the title and subtitle and adjust the coordinates line. Choose from five styles, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, and download 300 DPI files in six print sizes, including A3 and A2, or order a printed poster on matte paper.
