The map

About this Tacoma map poster

Tacoma climbs up from Commencement Bay at the southern end of Puget Sound. The downtown streets stack along a steep hillside. Below them, the tideflats of the Port of Tacoma are cut into a series of long, parallel waterways, each dredged to serve ships. The Thea Foss Waterway separates downtown from the port and gives the map a clear line between the city and its industry.

To the northwest, the city ends at Point Defiance Park, a large forested peninsula with a zoo, gardens and a loop road around its edge. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge crosses to the Kitsap Peninsula nearby. The first bridge on this site collapsed in 1940 after wind set its deck twisting, and engineers still study the film of that event. Ruston Way follows the shoreline between the point and downtown.

A Tacoma map poster shows the city's working character clearly. You can see the comb of port waterways, rail lines along the water, residential grids spreading south and west over the plateau, and the long curve of the shoreline. Mount Rainier lies well beyond the frame, but the Puyallup River carries its water into the bay, and that river shaped the tideflats the port was built on.

Port waterways

The tideflats at the mouth of the Puyallup River are divided into straight, parallel channels. From above they look like a comb pressed into the shore, the most distinctive pattern on the map.

02

Point Defiance

A wooded peninsula of several hundred acres at the city's northwest tip, circled by a scenic drive. It shows as a large, solid mass with water on three sides.

03

Narrows Bridge

Twin suspension spans cross the Tacoma Narrows toward Gig Harbor. The site is known for the 1940 collapse of the first bridge, nicknamed Galloping Gertie.

Why Tacoma

A map that means something

Tacoma has a loyal following among people who grew up on its hills, worked at the port or studied at its universities. A map captures what makes the city recognisable: water along much of its edge, industry by the bay and neighbourhoods climbing the slope.

You can title it Tacoma, name a neighbourhood such as the Stadium District, or add a date that matters, then choose one of five styles. Blueprint suits the port geometry especially well. Files come as a 300 DPI PNG and a print-ready PDF in six sizes.
