The map

About this Tai’an map poster

Tai’an exists because of the mountain behind it. Mount Tai, the most revered of China's Five Great Mountains, rises directly north of the city, and for centuries emperors and pilgrims set out from here to climb it. The city occupies the plain at its southern base. On a map the dense streets give way abruptly to winding mountain roads and wooded slopes.

At the heart of the old city stands the Dai Temple, where rituals to the mountain were held. A traditional route runs north from it to the foot of the climbing path. Mount Tai was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, and its stone stairway of thousands of steps remains one of China's classic pilgrim ascents.

A Tai’an map poster places the city and the mountain in the same frame. A regular grid of streets and blocks fills the south, and above it the irregular terrain of the massif is cut by winding roads and trails. The relationship between the two is the whole story of the place, and it reads clearly in any style.

Mount Tai massif

The mountain fills the northern part of the map. Its winding roads and paths contrast with the ordered streets of the city below.

02

Dai Temple axis

The large walled temple compound in the old centre marks the start of the traditional route that runs north towards the mountain and its climbing path.

03

Southern plain

South of the old centre, newer districts spread across level ground in wide blocks. Broad avenues and parks fill the space between the mountain and the countryside.

Why Tai’an

A map that means something

People who have climbed Mount Tai, perhaps overnight to watch the sunrise from the summit, often want a record of the trip that goes beyond photographs. A map shows both the city they started from and the mountain they climbed.

Put the date of the climb in the subtitle, choose a title and keep the coordinates. The poster comes in five styles, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, as a $9 digital download or a printed poster on matte paper.
