The map

About this Tangshan map poster

One date shaped Tangshan's map. On 28 July 1976 an earthquake destroyed most of the city, and much of what stands today was rebuilt in the years that followed. The result is an unusually orderly layout for a city of its age, with broad, straight roads and large, regular residential blocks spreading across the flat plain.

Tangshan grew on coal and later on steel. The Kailuan mines are among the oldest modern coal mines in China, and one of the country's earliest railways was built here in the 1880s to carry their output. Mining also left its mark on the ground: Nanhu Park, south of the centre, was created on land that had sunk above old workings.

The wider municipality reaches the Bohai Sea, where the port and industrial zone of Caofeidian extends into the water on reclaimed land. A Tangshan map poster usually centres on the city itself. There the rebuilt grid, the Nanhu lakes and the rail lines crossing the plain form a clear pattern that stays readable even at the smallest print size.

01

Post-1976 grid

Most of the centre follows the plan drawn up after the earthquake. Streets meet at right angles and blocks are large and even, which gives the map a measured, architectural rhythm.

02

Nanhu Park

A wide area of lakes and parkland south of the centre, created on land that sank above old mines. It is the largest open shape in the city, and its soft shorelines break the grid.

03

Railway lines

Tracks cross the city in long diagonals and curves. They recall Tangshan's early place in Chinese railway history and serve the heavy industry that still depends on them.
