The map

About this Tillsonburg map poster

Tillsonburg stands in southwestern Ontario, on the valley of Big Otter Creek. The creek runs through town with a wooded corridor along its banks, and the streets are arranged around it. The core is a straight main street with a tight grid on either side. Newer neighbourhoods spread outward in curving crescents before meeting the flat rectangles of the surrounding farmland.

The town takes its name from George Tillson, who settled here in the early nineteenth century and built an ironworks on the creek. Later, the surrounding farms became part of Ontario's tobacco belt. On the map, Lake Lisgar forms a small pool of water inside the town, and the creek's green corridor divides the grid.

A Tillsonburg map poster shows most of the town at a medium scale: the main street, the creek, the lake and the looser suburban edge. In black and white, the curving valley gives the plan a line that a pure grid would lack.

01

Big Otter Creek

The creek runs through Tillsonburg in a green, winding corridor. It breaks the street grid into separate sections on either side of the valley.

02

Lake Lisgar

A small lake inside the town forms a compact patch of open water that surrounding streets and parkland curve around.

03

Main street spine

A long, straight main street anchors the older part of town. Tight blocks line both sides of it before the grid loosens toward the suburbs.
