Agrigento sits high on a ridge on Sicily's southern coast. From above, the medieval core reads as a tight knot of stepped lanes and switchback streets pressed against the crest. Below it the land opens into a broad, gently falling valley. Roads fan out toward the coast a few kilometres away, and newer quarters spill down the slopes in long, curving terraces that follow the contours.
The city began as the Greek colony of Akragas, and its greatest monuments are not in the old town at all. They stand in the Valley of the Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Doric temples line a low ridge between the city and the sea. The Temple of Concordia there is one of the best-preserved Greek temples anywhere. The writer Luigi Pirandello was born just outside the city.

Valley of the Temples
South of the city, a low ridge carries the remains of Greek Akragas. On the map it is a wide, lightly drawn zone between the modern town and the coast.

Winding roads drop from the hill to the southern shore, looping back on themselves as they descend. They tie the upper town, the archaeological park and the coast together.
