Bongor lies on the east bank of the Logone River in southwestern Chad, directly across from Cameroon. From above the town follows the river: a grid of sandy streets along the bank, a riverfront where boats cross, and beyond it wide, flat plains that flood during the rainy season.
The town is the capital of Mayo-Kebbi Est Province and a market centre for the surrounding farmland, where rice is grown in the floodplain. The border runs down the middle of the river, so the water is both a transport route and an international boundary.
