Erbaa sits in the valley of the Kelkit River in Tokat Province, northern Turkey. From above, the town is a dense cluster of streets laid on flat, fertile ground. On every side it is surrounded by the small, regular field plots of an agricultural plain. The valley walls rise to the north and south and shape the whole picture, so the town reads as a pale knot in a long green corridor.
The street pattern is practical. It is a mix of straighter main roads and denser residential blocks, and it spreads outward over the plain rather than climbing the slopes. The river's course and the roads that follow the valley give the map a clear east–west direction. That direction holds the composition together even at a small print size, and it keeps the town from looking like a scatter of blocks.
A 1942 earthquake along the North Anatolian Fault struck Erbaa and the nearby valley hard. That fault line helped shape both the landscape and the town's later growth.
