Licata lies on the southern coast of Sicily in the province of Agrigento, where the Salso River reaches the Mediterranean. The town is built between the river mouth and the slopes of Monte Sant'Angelo, a hill topped by a castle. From above, the harbour's breakwaters stretch out into the sea, and the old streets spread along the flat land behind them.
The area was settled in antiquity, and the Greek city of Phintias was founded near here in the third century BC. In July 1943 Licata was one of the landing points of the Allied invasion of Sicily. Today its structure combines a compact historic centre, the fishing and commercial port, and newer districts extending inland and along the coast.
