About this Toluca map poster
Toluca sits in a wide, flat valley at around 2,600 metres, one of the highest state capitals in Mexico. From above, the centre is a tight colonial grid of short blocks around the main square. Outside it, the pattern loosens into long residential tracts, industrial parks and farmland. The valley floor is so level that the street network spreads almost evenly in every direction until it meets the surrounding slopes.
The main features on the map are the arteries that lead out of the old centre. The widest runs east toward the mountains that separate Toluca from Mexico City. Its lanes and interchanges show up as a heavy stroke on the page. To the west and north, the grid breaks into looser suburbs, and irrigated fields leave pale gaps between neighbourhoods. The volcano is out of frame, but the terrain slopes toward it.
