The map

About this Tuxtepec map poster

San Juan Bautista Tuxtepec, usually just Tuxtepec, is the main city of the Papaloapan region in northern Oaxaca, close to the border with Veracruz. Unlike the highland cities of the state, it lies in hot, low country, and the Papaloapan River runs beside the centre. The map shows a grid of blocks along the water, with bridges linking it to the opposite bank.

The surrounding lowlands are a farming region of sugar cane, pineapple and cattle, and the town grew as a trading centre for them. The river has shaped both its economy and its risks: floods along the Papaloapan led to major flood-control works across the basin in the mid twentieth century.

Tuxtepec is also known for the Flor de Piña, a dance performed by women carrying pineapples that represents the Papaloapan region at Oaxaca's Guelaguetza festival. A Tuxtepec map poster brings together the river, the bridges and the grid of the centre in a composition that feels very different from the mountain cities of the state.

01

Papaloapan River

The wide river runs alongside the town centre, the strongest natural line on the poster, with its curving banks drawn in clear, flowing contours.

02

Riverside grid

The older part of the city follows a regular grid of blocks next to the water, framed by the main square and the streets that lead down to the river.

03

Bridges across

Road bridges connect the city with the opposite bank and the surrounding region, short straight strokes that cross the river's curve and tie the two sides together.

Why Tuxtepec

A map that means something

Tuxtepec is home to people who often explain that their Oaxaca is not the one of the highlands. A map that centres the Papaloapan and its bridges makes that point without words, for a living room in Tuxtepec or for family members now living far away.

Add a title and subtitle of your choice, such as a family name or the date of a celebration, and keep the coordinates line. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then download the HD files for $9 or order a printed poster.
