The map

About this Tuxtla map poster

Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the capital of the Mexican state of Chiapas, stretches along a valley in the centre of the state. The city's grid spreads mostly east to west, following the shape of the valley, while hills rise to the north and south. The small Sabinal River flows through the city, its course lined in places with parks and green space.

Just to the east lies the Sumidero Canyon, where the Grijalva River runs between cliffs that rise hundreds of metres above the water. The canyon is a protected national park and the region's best-known natural landmark. Tuxtla itself has grown quickly over recent decades, spreading from its centre up the slopes and along the main highway.

A Tuxtla map poster shows a clear contrast between the orderly grid of the valley floor and the looser, curving streets on the surrounding hillsides. The river adds a thin winding line through the middle, and the elongated shape of the city gives the poster a strong horizontal energy that works well in landscape framing.

01

Valley grid

Straight, regular streets fill the flat valley floor in a neat pattern that stretches east to west along the axis of the city.

02

Sabinal River

This small river winds through the city, marked by strips of greenery and parkland that break the regularity of the grid.

03

Hillside edges

On the northern and southern slopes the streets bend and fragment as they climb, softening the edges of the composition.
