The map
Uzgen lies in Kyrgyzstan's Osh Region on the eastern edge of the Fergana Valley, near the Kara-Darya river. It is one of the oldest towns in the region and was once a capital of the Karakhanid state. On a map the older streets near the historic centre are irregular. Newer districts are laid out in straighter blocks, and cultivated fields spread across the valley floor around the town.
Its best-known monument is the Uzgen architectural complex, a brick minaret and a group of mausoleums from the eleventh and twelfth centuries, decorated with detailed carved brickwork. The town is also known across Central Asia for Uzgen rice, a reddish variety grown in the fields around it and valued for plov.
An Uzgen map poster shows the town in its valley setting. The river corridor runs along one side, the street network fills the middle ground, and farmland frames it all. The layout shows how long people have lived in this spot.
The river valley runs alongside the town, its broad course and floodplain adding a strong natural element to the edge of the map.
The Karakhanid minaret and mausoleums stand near the centre, marking the oldest part of town where the street pattern is least regular.
Irrigated farmland, including the paddies behind Uzgen's famous rice, surrounds the town and fills the outer frame with open, quiet space.
