The map
Vargem Grande lies in the north of Maranhão, in the interior southeast of the state capital, São Luís. On a map the town is a compact cluster of blocks around a central area, with streets extending outward along the main roads. Around it the landscape is low and open, with rivers, streams and patches of vegetation typical of the transition between the coastal region and the interior.
The name means a wide meadow or floodplain in Portuguese, a fitting description of the flat lands around the town. Vargem Grande serves as a local centre for commerce and services in the surrounding rural area, where farming and the harvesting of babaçu palm are part of everyday life in much of Maranhão.
A Vargem Grande map poster gives a small town its own clear portrait. The simple arrangement of streets, the roads leading away into the countryside and the curving lines of nearby watercourses combine into a composition that is modest and honest, much like the town itself, and meaningful to anyone with roots there.

Roads connecting Vargem Grande with other towns in Maranhão run out across the countryside, drawn as long lines through open land.
Streams and small rivers wander across the flat surroundings, their curving courses adding soft movement to the edges of the map.
