The map

About this Vavuniya map poster

Vavuniya lies in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka, on the flat dry-zone plain between the central highlands and Jaffna. It has long been a gateway town, the point where the A9 highway, the main road to the north, meets routes from the east and west, and the railway to Jaffna passes through it as well. On a map, the town grows outward from these arteries.

Like much of the dry zone, the landscape around Vavuniya is shaped by tanks, the ancient irrigation reservoirs of Sri Lanka. Several appear on the map as open water within and around the town, with paddy fields and scrubland spreading between them. The street pattern is loose and practical, with markets and public buildings concentrated along the main roads.

A Vavuniya map poster captures that crossroads character: the strong lines of the highway and railway, the water of the tanks and the quieter residential streets in between. It is a clear, honest portrait of a town that has long served as the meeting point between the north of the island and the rest of the country.

01

A9 highway

The main road between Kandy and Jaffna runs straight through the town, forming the backbone of the street network and the dominant line of the composition.

02

Irrigation tanks

Reservoirs within and around the town appear as open shapes of water, a characteristic feature of the dry-zone landscape and a calm counterpoint to the streets.

03

Northern railway

The line to Jaffna passes through Vavuniya, adding a long, continuous stroke that crosses the town alongside the road network.
