The map
Veles lies in central North Macedonia, where the Vardar River passes through a narrow valley between steep hills. From above, the town is arranged along both banks. The houses of the old quarters climb the slopes in terraces, and the streets curve around the contours in tight loops. Bridges connect the two sides, and the railway follows the river along the valley floor.
During the Yugoslav period the town was known as Titov Veles. Veles is also the birthplace of Kočo Racin, a poet regarded as a founder of modern Macedonian literature. The older neighbourhoods, with their tiled roofs stacked one above another on the hillside, give the town its distinctive appearance, often compared to an amphitheatre around the river.
A Veles map poster shows a town shaped almost entirely by its terrain. The Vardar runs through the centre like a spine, the streets bend and fold as they climb, and the bare hills around them are left as open space. The result is one of the most expressive plans a small town can have.
The river runs through a narrow valley right through the town. It forms the central axis of the map, with bridges stitching the two banks together.
Residential lanes climb the steep slopes along the contours. They create tight curves and switchbacks that give the plan its folded look.
The main railway line follows the Vardar through the gorge. Its smooth, continuous line runs parallel to the river at the bottom of the valley.

Why Veles
