About this Veliko Tŭrnovo map poster
Veliko Tŭrnovo stands in north-central Bulgaria, where the Yantra River has cut deep, tight meanders into the limestone hills. Few towns are shaped so completely by a river: the water doubles back on itself several times, and the old town follows the high ground between the loops, its streets running along contour lines rather than in any grid.
From the late twelfth to the late fourteenth century this was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. The fortified hill of Tsarevets, almost enclosed by a bend of the Yantra, held the royal palace and the patriarchal church, and the neighbouring hill of Trapezitsa was also fortified. Both appear on the map as nearly circular islands of open ground.
Below the ridges, houses climb the steep slopes in tiers, and the monument to the Asen dynasty rises within one of the river bends. The town is also home to a major university.
