The map
Vĩnh Thạnh is a rural district in the northwest of Can Tho, in the Mekong Delta, and its map is unlike most. The land is flat and given over largely to rice, crossed by long, straight canals dug for irrigation and transport. Settlements follow these waterways in thin lines, so villages look like threads on the map rather than clusters.
The effect from above is almost geometric: parallel canals, right-angled crossings, and a regular division of fields between them. The larger rivers and main roads are the only lines that break this order. Towns form where they meet the canal network, creating small nodes of denser streets in an otherwise open landscape.
A Vĩnh Thạnh map poster is a study in lines and repetition. In black and white, it looks close to abstract art: long straight strokes of water, fine rows of houses along them, and wide calm fields in between. It is a picture of the delta as a working landscape, shaped by generations of farmers.
Irrigation canals run for kilometres in straight lines across the district, forming the dominant geometry of the entire map.
Houses line the canal banks in long, narrow strips, so settlements appear as threads following the water rather than compact towns.
Between the canals, rice fields divide the land into broad rectangles, giving the poster a calm, repeating rhythm across its surface.
