The map
Vranje lies in the far south of Serbia, near the border with North Macedonia and Kosovo, where the valley of the South Morava meets the surrounding mountains. The town grew on the slopes on the western side of the valley, so its map shows a flat, open plain on one side and streets rising into hills on the other.
The old centre has a winding, Ottoman-era street pattern, with short, crooked streets around the main square and along a small river that runs through town. Newer districts spread downhill toward the valley, where the main highway and railway toward Skopje and Thessaloniki run in long straight lines.
A Vranje map poster shows a town that has long stood on the route between Central Europe and the Aegean. Above it are the ruins of Markovo Kale, a medieval fortress, and in the centre stands the Pasha's residence known as the White House. Vranje is also the setting of Bora Stanković's novel Impure Blood, one of the classics of Serbian literature.
Irregular, winding streets in the historic centre follow the terrain and older plots, giving this part of the map a dense, organic texture.
To the east, the flat valley with highway and railway forms a broad open band crossed by long straight lines, contrasting with the hilly town.
Streets climb into the hills west of the centre, rising toward the ruins of Markovo Kale, so the map gradually thins out into steep, open land.

Why Vranje
Vranje carries a strong sense of identity for people from the south of Serbia and for readers who know Stanković's novels. A map of the old streets, hills and valley is a restrained way to bring that identity into a home or office.
