The map
Wah Fu is a public housing estate in the Pok Fu Lam area of Hong Kong Island's Southern District. Built between the late 1960s and the late 1970s, it was one of the first large, carefully planned estates in Hong Kong, designed with its own schools, shops, markets and open spaces. From above, its tall residential blocks stand in rows on terraces cut into the hillside.
The estate faces the sea, looking west across the East Lamma Channel. Below it lies Waterfall Bay Park, named after a small waterfall that drops directly into the sea, a spot noted by early European sailors. Winding roads climb from the shore up the slope, and green hillsides and country park land rise behind the estate toward the island's central ridge.
A Wah Fu map poster shows a very different Hong Kong from the dense grid of Central or Kowloon: curved access roads following the contours, clustered housing blocks, a rocky coastline and the open water beyond. In black and white, the relationship between planned architecture and steep natural terrain is especially striking.
Wah Fu's residential towers are arranged on hillside terraces, forming distinct clusters linked by footpaths, podiums and curving service roads.
The small coastal park below the estate is named for a waterfall that falls into the sea, giving the shoreline a rocky, uneven outline.
Open water to the west carries shipping between Hong Kong Island and Lamma Island, filling a large, quiet part of the poster.
