The map

About this Waipahu map poster

Waipahu lies on the southern side of Oahu, between the Waianae and Koolau ranges. Here the land slopes gently down to the West and Middle Lochs of Pearl Harbor. On a map the town covers that slope with a close mesh of residential streets. The H-1 freeway crosses it, and an irregular shoreline and wetlands mark its lower edge.

The town grew around the Oahu Sugar Company mill, which ran for about a century, and its tall smokestack still stands near the old town center. Plantation workers came from Japan, China, the Philippines, Portugal, Korea and elsewhere. Hawaii's Plantation Village, an outdoor museum in Waipahu, preserves homes and stories from that period.

A Waipahu map poster shows the older plantation streets near the mill site, the newer subdivisions climbing inland and the fingers of water reaching in from Pearl Harbor. The coastline gives the design a strong edge on one side. The freeway and dense housing give it a fine, even texture everywhere else.

01

Pearl Harbor lochs

The West and Middle Lochs push into the land south of town. Their branching shapes of water give the poster its most distinctive outline.

02

Old mill district

The streets near the former sugar mill are the oldest part of Waipahu. Their smaller-scale pattern reflects the town's origins as a plantation community.

03

H-1 corridor

The H-1 freeway and Farrington Highway run east to west across town. These two parallel lines tie Waipahu to Honolulu and to the Ewa plain.
