The map
Wang Thonglang lies in the north-eastern part of Bangkok, between Lat Phrao, Bang Kapi and Huai Khwang. It has no neat grid. From above, the district shows the typical Bangkok pattern: a few heavy arterial roads with long, narrow sois branching off them into deep blocks of housing, small shops and townhouses. Many of these sois end in dead ends.
Canals, or khlongs, still run through the district and along parts of its edges. They are older than most of the streets and often explain why the roads bend the way they do. Newer expressways and elevated rail lines cross overhead, putting a straight modern layer on top of this older network of waterways and lanes.
A Wang Thonglang map poster turns this dense residential fabric into something surprisingly graphic. The main roads look like thick stems and the sois like hundreds of fine branches, all interrupted by the thin curving lines of the canals. It is a portrait of everyday Bangkok, away from the river and the landmark districts.
Long, numbered side streets run off the main roads at regular intervals and create a comb-like pattern that is typical of Bangkok's residential districts.
Canals thread between the blocks and along the district's edges, older waterways that still shape how the streets bend and where they stop.
A few wide roads carry most of the traffic and form the strong main lines of the map, with the fine soi network hanging from them.
