The map

About this Wattala map poster

Wattala is a suburban town in Gampaha District in Sri Lanka's Western Province, just north of Colombo across the Kelani River. On the map it forms a long, dense strip of streets along the main road running north toward Negombo, squeezed between the coast on one side and low wetland on the other.

The town has grown quickly as part of the greater Colombo area, and it is largely residential and commercial, with a mix of older lanes and newer housing. To the north lies Muthurajawela, a large coastal marsh and protected wetland, which limits building and gives the area a lot of open water and green space nearby.

A Wattala map poster captures a place defined by its edges. The river forms one boundary, the sea another and the marshland a third, while the town fills the land between them with a fine network of lanes branching off the main road.

03

Wetland to the north

The Muthurajawela marsh spreads beyond the built area as an open expanse of water and vegetation, one of the calmest parts of the map.
