About this Weligama map poster
Weligama lies on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, between Galle and Matara. Its name is often translated as sandy village, and the map explains it: the town follows the long, smooth curve of Weligama Bay. The coastline is the defining shape, a wide arc of beach with the sea filling half the frame.
The coastal road runs along the bay, and most of the town sits between it and the shore or just inland. Behind that strip, streets thin out into palm groves, paddy fields and low hills. A small river enters the sea near the town, adding a curving line of water to the plan.
Just off the beach sits Taprobane Island, a tiny rocky islet with a villa built by the Count de Mauny in the 1920s and later owned by the writer Paul Bowles. The bay is now also known for surfing. A Weligama map poster captures the bay, the island and the town in one simple composition.
