The lake
West Lake lies on the western edge of Hangzhou, one of the most celebrated landscapes in China and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is small in area, but its outline is precise and full of detail, with the city pressing against its eastern shore and wooded hills enclosing the other sides.
Two long causeways cross the water: the Su Causeway runs north to south along the western part, and the Bai Causeway reaches out from the northern shore toward Gushan island. Between them, the lake divides into smaller sections, each with its own islands and bridges.
In the southern part of the lake, the island of Xiaoying holds the stone pagodas of Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, and Leifeng Pagoda stands on a hill on the southern shore. A West Lake map poster shows how carefully designed this landscape is, lines of causeway set against the city's rigid grid.

On the eastern shore the regular streets of the city press directly against the water, a sharp contrast with the wooded hills elsewhere.
In the southern part of the lake an island with inner ponds holds the three stone pagodas known as Three Pools Mirroring the Moon.

Why West Lake
For those who have lived in or visited Hangzhou, West Lake is the city's centre of gravity: walks along the causeways, boats among the islands, mornings in the hill tea villages. The map records that designed landscape with unusual precision.
Choose your own title and subtitle, perhaps a date or a street name, and edit the coordinates line. The five styles, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, give you options for any interior, and HD files come without a watermark.
