Aalsmeer is a town in North Holland, just southwest of Amsterdam, known worldwide for its flower trade. On a map its most striking feature is the Westeinderplassen, a large lake area on its southern and western side. The lakes are broken up by islands, narrow strips of land and old peat-cutting patterns. The town itself follows the lake shore in a long, linear form.
In the north of the municipality stands the Aalsmeer flower auction, run by Royal FloraHolland. Its building has one of the largest footprints in the world, and huge volumes of cut flowers and plants pass through it every day. Schiphol Airport lies directly to the north, and one of its runways, the Aalsmeerbaan, is named after the town.
