Te mapa
Ādīs ‘Alem lies in the West Shewa zone of Oromia, on the highway running west from Addis Ababa towards Ambo. The town is built on rising ground above the surrounding farmland. On the map the main road forms a strong line through the lower town, and streets and lanes climb towards the hill crowned by the church compound.
The name means new world. Around 1900 Emperor Menelik II began building here with the idea of moving the capital away from Addis Ababa, partly because firewood around the young city was running short. The plan was abandoned, but the church of St Mary built at his command still stands on its hill and today also houses a museum.
An Ādīs ‘Alem map poster captures a town shaped by a capital that never arrived. Instead of grand avenues, the map shows a modest highland settlement: a highway, a market area, residential compounds and the hill with its church. Farmland stretches in every direction, and the road east leads back towards the city that kept its status.
The compound of the St Mary church occupies raised ground above the town, a distinct open shape that marks the site Menelik II chose for his new capital.
The main road west from Addis Ababa runs through the lower town, drawn as a firm, direct line with most commercial streets gathered along it.
Open farmland surrounds the town across the plateau, divided by tracks and small streams, leaving the settlement clearly outlined on the sheet.
