Te mapa
Agats is the capital of Asmat Regency in South Papua, Indonesia, on the swampy southern coast of New Guinea near the Arafura Sea. The land here is tidal mangrove and mud, so the town is built largely on stilts and connected by raised boardwalks instead of ordinary paved roads.
Seen from above, Agats is a lattice of walkways laid over wet ground, with houses, offices and churches strung along them. Wide tidal rivers bound the town, and beyond them lies dense mangrove and lowland forest. The Asmat people of the region are internationally known for their woodcarving, which the town's museum displays.
An Agats map poster shows an unusual urban form: a network of straight lines over water and marsh, framed by broad, curving rivers. It is a rare image of a town that exists in close negotiation with the tide.
Raised walkways take the place of conventional streets, forming a regular web across the swamp that reads on the poster like an ordinary street grid.
Broad rivers curve around the town and toward the sea, their wide bands dominating the map and setting the limits of the settlement.
Beyond the built area, unbroken mangrove and lowland forest extend in every direction, leaving large empty areas around a small, dense town.
