Te mapa
Alangad lies in Ernakulam district, north of Kochi and close to the lower reaches of the Periyar River. As in much of central Kerala, there is no sharp boundary between town and countryside. On a map, houses and lanes spread through the landscape in a continuous, loose pattern, following the raised ground between fields and waterways.
Water defines the layout. Branches of the river, canals and low-lying paddy land leave curving gaps in the street network, and roads often trace the edges of these wet areas instead of crossing them directly. The result is an organic, meandering drawing with few straight lines. In reality much of it is shaded by coconut palms, which the map leaves as open space.
Alangad has long been a centre of the Syro-Malabar Christian community, and its old church is one of the older parish churches in the region. The area was also once the seat of a small local principality. An Alangad map poster shows this river country from above, where the lines of land and water run close together.
Channels of the Periyar and connecting canals run through the area. They appear as smooth curves that shape the roads and give the poster its soft, flowing structure.
Open, low-lying fields interrupt the settlement and leave broad empty areas on the map. They show how building follows the higher, drier ground.
Small roads twist between houses and gardens and are rarely straight for long. At poster scale they create a fine, lace-like network typical of central Kerala.

Koteā ko Alangad
For Keralites living in the Gulf, in Europe or in other Indian cities, a place like Alangad is home in a very specific sense. A map of its lanes and waterways quietly recalls the family house, the parish or the route to the river.
Personalise the title with a house name, a family name or a date, and keep the coordinates line. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The $9 download includes six print sizes, or you can order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
