Te mapa
‘Alem T’ēna lies in the Oromia region of Ethiopia, in the northern part of the Great Rift Valley south of Addis Ababa. The land here is broad and relatively flat between the escarpments, with the lakes of the Rift Valley not far away. From above, the town gathers along the main road, with streets spreading out on each side.
Like many towns along Ethiopia's main routes, ‘Alem T’ēna has grown around the road, which carries traffic between the capital region and the south. Shops and services line the road, and residential streets extend behind them in an irregular pattern. Beyond the town, fields and open land stretch across the valley floor.
An ‘Alem T’ēna map poster shows this linear form clearly. The main road runs through the frame as a strong line, the streets branch from it, and the open valley surrounds them. It is a simple and honest picture of a town that many people pass through and some call home.
The town grew along the main road through the Rift Valley, which runs through its centre as the strongest line on the map.
Residential streets branch off the road on both sides in a loose pattern, filling out the town behind the roadside shops and services.
Around the town, the wide floor of the Great Rift Valley spreads out as farmland and open land, framing the built-up area.
