Te mapa
Alīpur Duār is the headquarters of a district in northern West Bengal, in the Dooars, the belt of plains at the foot of the eastern Himalaya. The town grew up with the railway. Nearby Alipurduar Junction remains the base of a railway division serving much of north Bengal and parts of the Northeast. On a map, tracks and yards form long straight lines close to the settlement.
The Kaljani River runs past the town, with smaller streams and old channels crossing the low ground. Streets form a loose grid around the market and administrative centre, then fade into villages, paddy and the orderly blocks of tea estates. The whole area is flat, but the hills of Bhutan rise only a short distance to the north.
The district is known as a gateway to Buxa Tiger Reserve and Jaldapara National Park, home to the Indian one-horned rhinoceros. An Alīpur Duār map poster keeps the focus on the town itself. Even so, the rivers, rail lines and field patterns in the drawing hint at the forested country that surrounds it on almost every side.
Tracks and sidings meet at the junction, drawn as long straight strokes. They cut across the curving roads and give the map its most recognisable structure.
The river and its side channels bend around the town in a loose, braided line typical of rivers coming down from the Himalayan foothills.
Beyond the built-up area, estates appear as broad, regular parcels with internal roads, a pattern characteristic of the tea-growing Dooars.
