Alytus lies in southern Lithuania on the Nemunas, the country's largest river, which passes through the city in a broad meander between steep, wooded banks. On a map, the river divides Alytus into two parts linked by bridges, with the centre on one side and further districts spreading across higher ground on the other. Forests come close to the city on several sides.
The town was first mentioned in 1377, and a hillfort beside the river marks one of the oldest settled points in the area. Later growth, especially in the Soviet decades, added large housing estates and industrial zones, which appear on an Alytus map poster as broad, regular blocks set back from the river's curves.
The river valley itself stays largely green, with parks and forested slopes along the water rather than a built-up embankment. That gives the map an open centre, with the city wrapped around a winding band of empty space. For a city of this size, it makes an unusually calm composition.
The Nemunas loops through the city in a wide curve. Its course, lined by steep wooded banks, is the most recognisable shape on the poster and splits the city in two.
The old hillfort rises beside the river near the centre. It marks the city's early history and sits where the older streets meet the green river slopes.
Large residential estates from the late twentieth century form regular blocks and loops on the higher ground. Their geometry contrasts with the winding river and the older streets.

Koteā ko Alytus
People from Alytus often talk about the river first: the bridges, the steep banks and the forests at the edge of town. A map brings all of that into one image and makes a thoughtful gift for anyone who grew up here or has moved away.
