Te mapa
Ambalavao lies in the southern highlands of Madagascar, south of Fianarantsoa on the RN7, the main road toward the south of the island. From above, the town is small and compact, its streets gathered along the highway and a few side roads, surrounded by rice fields in the valley bottoms and bare, rocky hills beyond.
The town is known for Antemoro paper, a handmade paper traditionally pressed with dried flowers, and for one of the country's largest zebu markets, where cattle are brought from across the south. Nearby, the granite outcrops of the Anja community reserve shelter ring-tailed lemurs, and the Andringitra massif rises further south.
An Ambalavao map poster shows a highland town within its landscape: the RN7 running through, lanes branching toward the market and fields, and the terrain pressing close around it. In monochrome the town's modest scale becomes a strength, giving the print a clear, uncluttered shape with plenty of space around the settlement.
Madagascar's main southern highway passes through Ambalavao, forming a long central axis from which the town's streets branch away.
Irrigated rice paddies fill the lower ground around the town, defining where the streets stop and open land begins on the map.
Granite hills and outcrops surround the valley, leaving broad open spaces on the map that frame the settlement and hint at the dramatic landscape beyond.

Travellers on the RN7 often stop in Ambalavao for its paper workshops and cattle market, and the town stays in the memory. A map of it is a thoughtful souvenir of Madagascar, and for Malagasy families a direct link to the highlands.
