Te mapa
Antsirabe lies on a high plateau south of Antananarivo, surrounded by old volcanic cones, crater lakes and terraced rice fields. The town centre is unusually open for Madagascar. A broad, straight avenue with a colonial-era layout leads to the station, and a small lake and green spaces sit near the historic thermal baths. Beyond this core, streets bend with the hilly ground and fade into farmland.
Norwegian missionaries founded the settlement in the 1870s, attracted by its mineral springs. The name refers to the salt found here. Under French rule Antsirabe became a spa resort, and the grand Hôtel des Thermes still stands above the town. Today it is also known for its colourful pousse-pousse rickshaws and as a base for visiting crater lakes such as Andraikiba and Tritriva.
An Antsirabe map poster brings out the planned central axis, the loose lines of the upland roads and the small bodies of water around the town. In black and white it has a gentle, spacious balance.

The area around the historic baths and the lake near the centre forms a green, open pocket where the town's spa origins can still be read in the layout.
The countryside around the town is dotted with cones and crater lakes, and rural roads wind between them across the plateau towards the edge of the frame.
