Mahajanga sits on Madagascar's northwest coast, at the point where the wide estuary of the Betsiboka River meets Bombetoka Bay. From above, the town looks like a compact wedge of streets on a headland. Water frames it on two sides: the calm bay to the south and the open channel to the west. Behind it, the land spreads out into low, dry country.
The oldest part of town packs its short, irregular blocks close to the harbour. Further inland, longer roads run out through newer districts toward the airport and the villages beyond. A seafront boulevard follows the western shore, and the grid loosens into scattered lanes wherever the coast bends. This contrast between a tight centre and loose edges gives the drawing its structure.
For centuries Mahajanga was a trading port linking Madagascar with the Swahili coast, Arabia and India, and the town still has a mix of mosques, churches and old merchant houses. A Mahajanga map poster shows that seaward orientation plainly: nearly every main road ends at the water, and the estuary takes up as much of the frame as the town does.
One of Madagascar's largest rivers widens into Bombetoka Bay just south of the town. On a black-and-white map it becomes a broad, branching expanse of open water.
A road runs along the western shoreline and traces the coast in a smooth line, drawing a crisp edge between the dense street pattern and the sea.
A huge old baobab stands in the middle of a roundabout near the waterfront and is one of the town's best-known sights. Roads circle it, marking a small hub in the street plan.

Koteā ko Mahajanga
People hang this map to remember a port where the river, the bay and the town meet in one view, whether they grew up there, worked there or simply watched the sun set over the channel. On a wall, the coastline reads almost like a drawing.
You can add your own title, a subtitle such as a date, and the coordinates line, then pick one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The files come in six print sizes, or you can order a printed poster.
