Te mapa
Antsiranana, also known as Diego-Suarez, lies near the northern tip of Madagascar. It sits on a peninsula in a huge, complex bay that ranks among the world's largest natural harbours. On a map, the water dominates: arms of the bay reach deep into the land, and the town takes up a small, well-defined piece of ground surrounded by sea.
The town's layout reflects its colonial past as a French naval base. The street grid is fairly regular, with wide avenues running across the peninsula and port facilities along the waterfront. Inside the bay, the small island of Nosy Lonjo, known in French as the Sugarloaf, rises as a distinctive shape.
An Antsiranana map poster captures the relationship between the town and the bay. Beyond the town, roads lead toward the Montagne d'Ambre national park to the south and the beaches and lagoons along the northern coast. Many travellers pass through the town on their way to these landscapes.
A vast, multi-armed bay surrounds the town, with intricate shorelines that fill much of the map with water and coastline.
The town occupies a peninsula with a fairly regular street plan, marked out clearly by the water on several sides.
The small island known as the Sugarloaf stands inside the bay, a distinctive shape near the town that is often recognised by visitors.
