Pemba Bay
The enormous bay opens to the west and south of the town. On the poster it forms a broad, calm expanse of paper that sets off the fine lines of the streets.

Te mapa
Pemba sits on a narrow peninsula at the entrance of Pemba Bay on the Indian Ocean coast of northern Mozambique. From above, the town is shaped by water on almost every side. The older part and the port occupy the tip of the peninsula, the newer neighbourhoods spread inland along the main roads, and a long sandy beach faces the open sea to the east.
Pemba is the capital of Cabo Delgado Province, and its bay is often described as one of the largest natural bays in the world. Under Portuguese rule the town was called Porto Amélia. Wimbe Beach, with its coral reefs close to shore, has long drawn visitors to this part of the coast.
A Pemba map poster is dominated by its coastline. The bay forms a huge smooth shape on one side, the ocean shore makes a long clean line on the other, and the streets of the town fit onto the land between them in a way that is immediately recognisable.
The enormous bay opens to the west and south of the town. On the poster it forms a broad, calm expanse of paper that sets off the fine lines of the streets.
The old town and the port sit at the tip of the peninsula, where the bay meets the ocean. The streets are at their densest there, on the most exposed point of land.
Along the eastern shore, Wimbe Beach runs as a long gentle line facing the Indian Ocean. The road along it gives the coast a continuous, readable edge.

Koteā ko Pemba
Pemba means home, work or a remembered stretch of coast to many people. The contrast between the wide bay and the compact town makes a strong, simple composition that stays clear even at small print sizes.
